Lumbar hernia occurs when the discs in the lower part of the spine (lumbar region) protrude outward. This condition puts pressure on the nerve roots, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness in the back and legs. Lumbar hernia typically results from aging, lifting heavy loads, working in physically demanding jobs, or poor posture. When the intervertebral discs in the lumbar region wear out, the herniated disc can press on the spinal cord or nerves, causing pain and limited mobility.
The treatment of lumbar hernia usually begins with conservative methods. Pain relief medications, physical therapy, exercises, and sometimes epidural injections are used to reduce pain and improve the patient’s quality of life. However, if these methods are not sufficient, surgical intervention may be required. Surgical interventions for lumbar hernia include microdiscectomy and discectomy. These procedures help reduce the pressure on the nerves and relieve pain.
With the proper treatment methods, most patients can return to their daily life. Early diagnosis and treatment prevent more complex situations and speed up the recovery process.
